2024 CD 14 Townhall – A Conversation with Ysabel Jurado

For those of you not in attendance, below is our process for the event.

THE IDEA

ADCCLA and LARABA have a long history of civic and community engagement. In these unprecedented times, we felt the need for a different approach. Instead of the traditional debate format, we are creating a unique town hall of neighbors so each candidate can have a conversation with us about the issues impacting our lives.

This election cycle has delivered two candidates out of a vast field: These include Council District 14 incumbent Kevin DeLeon and Civil Rights Attorney Ysabel Jurado.

THE PROCESS

As part of our process, we reached out to both Candidates in early July to suggest holding individual town halls. The idea was to give the candidates a more intimate platform to discuss issues directly impacting the Arts District community and CD 14 as a whole. This is a unique opportunity to hear from a candidate seeking your vote in November.

ArtshareLA has graciously offered to host the candidates in their theater, and we reserved the 14th and 21st of September. The first respondent got to select the date.

LARABA and ADCCLA have not and do not endorse political candidates. We are holding this town hall as a community service.

THE OUTCOME

Ms. Jurado’s team responded first and selected the 21st.

Despite our repeated efforts, Mr. De Leon’s team showed no meaningful interest in participating. After extending two deadlines, we notified Mr. De Leon’s campaign manager that the window had closed and that we had to release the venue.

While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to host both candidates to hear their visions for our community, we are thrilled to have Ms. Jurado join us on the 21st to share hers.
